The Art of Brainstorming for New Content

Coming up with new content can be tough, especially when you've had the business for awhile. It can feel like you've already exhausted all relevant topics. Keep in mind, whatever your business is, you're the expert! What comes naturally to you or seems obvious, may not be to others that aren't experts in your field. So there is always more to write about. Below is  couple way to come up with new ideas.

Write a Lot About a Little, not a Little About a Lot

An English teacher I once had said this to our class, and it resonated with me. Yes, I've written a blog post about Instagram, but I could certainly write another focusing on something more specific about the social media platform and go into a lot more detail. That brings me to our next point...

Never Stop Learning

Learning something new about your field or perhaps business in general can give you more to write about. It's a topic I've talked about before, but it's so important! The world is always changing, especially with technology so it is vital not to stay stagnant. No matter if you have your GED, college diploma, or Masters, we all have things to learn. You can share your new found info with your followers and give your opinion so its unique. The worst thing you can do for yourself and your company is to stop learning.

Say "Yes" to Silly

When brainstorming ideas it's important to allow ideas to flow and not shut them down if they seem silly, stupid, or even off brand. What you should focus on is coming up with ideas and then reigning them in to be realistic. Saying "no" can prevent you from having brilliant and creative ideas, which is vital for entrepreneurs!

Two Heads Are Better Than One

When you do come up with a brilliant idea, no matter if its on your own or with others, it's a good idea to run it by more people.Whats even better than two heads? Three, or four! Consider conducting your own focus group, or sending out your next blog post and having friends edit and give their opinions.

Use your Experience

Sometimes I have no idea what my next blog post will be able. Then, a few days before I'm planning to post something will happen that will inspire me. Perhaps I'll walk past a building and without seeing the sign, know what business it is because of the branding. Or, I'll travel somewhere new and the different way they do marketing will inspire me to think of street art, or boat billboards (both of which were prominent in Miami!)

Creating new content doesn't have to be a brain-racking activity. It can be fun, silly, and over lunch or a glass of wine with friends. The more you do it, the easier it will become. When I first starting writing my blog posts, it took me almost two hours to write and do the graphics. Now I have it down to a science. When I can't think of a topic, I use my own tips and then words fly out!
