In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd, this weeks blog post is all about how Dr. Seuss books and the brand itself are marketing gold. Similar to my last blog post which related qualities of modern business people to the Tortoise and the Hare, we can learn as entrepreneurs about marketing from this brand.

Branding

Arguably, one of the most important aspects of a company is their brand. I've written before about how important it is to be consistent with colors, fonts, and other branding techniques and Dr. Seuss is an amazing example of this. One word that could sum all this up for Dr. Seuss is whimsical.  From the writing style (as outlined below) to wonky shapes in pastel colors sketched with black, we can recognize a Dr. Seuss drawing or book right off the bat. It makes us as entrepreneurs think "Am I doing that with my brand?" if you're not, brush up on some tips and get started today!

Target Audience

When it comes to providing for the right demographic, Dr. Seuss is right on the money. The content of Dr. Seuss books is digestible for kids but also entertaining for the parents reading it to them. Similar to the way I put my dogs medication in peanut butter, every Dr. Seuss book has a brilliant, thought-provoking message, yet is disguised as a fun rhyming children's book. Whenever you write a blog post, make a YouTube video, or post on social media, think "Whose my target market?" and "Is this something that is beneficial to them?"

Writing Style

I'm no poet, and trust me, I know it! I always joke that whenever I try to write a poem it comes out like a Dr.Seuss book. By that I don't mean that my poems are well-written and loved by children and adults alike. No, I mean that every end word rhymes and on the surface doesn't seem very deep. Hence the reason why every poem I attempt to write is a rough draft and for my eyes only. The point I'm trying to make is that Dr. Seuss books have  a certain writing style. Not only do his books rhyme, but they occasionally insert made up words such as "snergelly" or "Bar-ba-loots" that add to the whimsical vibe. Not to mention, these books produce the best quotes! By rhyming every book and using this fantastical language, the Dr Seuss franchise created its own writing style which is recognizable to virtually everyone familiar with his work. Dr. Seuss reminds us to be consistent when writing and creating our own content. Are you writing in a familiar tone? Do you share personal experiences and pictures or are you only sharing company info? Something to keep in mind when creating content.

I have to admit, I love Dr. Seuss and was excited for the opportunity to write about how it can translate to the business world. Dr. Seuss books have more to teach us then life lessons and how to rhyme words. There's things to learn from the brand as well that we can bring over to our business. Next time you develop content for your business, I hope you keep Dr. Seuss in mind!
